ESMH Summer School 2026: A Unique Opportunity for Young Science Journalists in the Age of AI

The European Science-Media Hub (ESMH), an initiative of the European Parliament, has officially opened applications for its 2026 Summer School – a four-day intensive programme dedicated to science communication in the era of Artificial Intelligence.

Taking place from 22 to 25 June 2026 in Brussels, the Summer School will bring together up to 50 young journalists and content creators from across the European Union. The programme is designed for those who are already working in journalism or content creation and have a strong interest in science and technology.

At a time when AI is rapidly transforming how information is produced, distributed and consumed, the role of journalists is evolving just as quickly. From automated content generation to algorithm-driven news feeds, AI is reshaping both the newsroom and the audience. The ESMH Summer School aims to address this transformation directly—exploring not only the opportunities AI offers, but also its limitations, risks and ethical implications.

Participants will take part in interactive, hands-on workshops led by experienced science journalists and media trainers. In smaller working groups, they will learn how to integrate AI tools into their reporting and editing workflows, while maintaining accuracy, credibility and editorial integrity. The programme will also focus on one of the most critical challenges in modern journalism: how to communicate complex scientific topics in a clear, engaging and accessible way.

Beyond the workshops, the Summer School will feature panel discussions with policymakers, researchers, journalists and communication experts, offering participants a broader perspective on the relationship between science, media and public policy in Europe.

The programme is open to applicants who:

  • are EU citizens,
  • are between 18 and 36 years old,
  • are fluent in English,
  • have at least two years of professional experience in journalism or content creation,
  • demonstrate a strong interest in science communication.

Importantly, selected participants will receive financial support covering travel within the EU and accommodation, making the programme accessible to a diverse group of young professionals.

More than just a training, the ESMH Summer School is an opportunity to join a growing European network of science communicators and to develop the skills needed to navigate a media landscape increasingly shaped by AI.
